Many whole numbers have common factors.

 

Remember - Factors are numbers that can be divided evenly into another number.

Let's find the common factors for 18 and 24.

18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18
24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24
Common factors: 1, 2, 3, 6
The Greatest Common Factor (GCF) is 6.

What if we have more than two numbers?

Easy!  Let's find the common factors and the GCF
for 12, 36, and 48.

12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
36: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36
48: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 48
Common factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12

The GCF is 12!
