Know Elements of Three-Dimensional Objects Lesson Page Banner

Lady at ChalkboardThere are three elements we must know about three-dimensional objects, otherwise known as geometric solids.

They are:

Rectangular Prism

Faces

The flat surfaces of a solid
Edges Formed when two faces are joined together
Vertices
(plural for vertex)
Formed when three faces are joined together (the corners)

Ladybug

When looking at the rectangular prism we can see it has

  6 faces - 4 going around and 2 sides
12 edges - 4 going around and 8 on the sides
  8 vertices - the 8 corners

StarThink about a sphere...

Sphere  Does it have any flat surfaces?  NO!
That means there are no edges or vertices either!
