When given a formula, we  solve for given input values.

Three such formulas are surface area, rate, and density.

Let's do an example of each!
Just put the numbers in place of the variables.

In a rectangular prism, the length is 5.5 cm, the width 1.9 cm, and the height 4 cm.  Find the surface area.

Formula:

SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh

SA = 2(5.5)(1.9) + 2(5.5)(4) + 2(1.9)(4)
SA = 20.9 + 44 + 15.2
SA = 80.1 cm²

Carli traveled 460 miles in 8 hours.  At what average rate was she traveling?

Formula:

d = rt

460 = 8r
r = 57.5 mph

What is the density of an object if its mass is 64 grams and its volume is 8 cm³?

Formula:

d = m/v

d = 64/ 8
d = 8 g/ cm³

Let's do some practice problems!
