Some equations have multiple steps.

 

In the first example, we will need to first combine like terms,
then solve the equation.

7x - 9 - 2x = 6

We must first combine 7x and -2x.

5x - 9 = 6

Now this is a two-step equation...

5x - 9 + 9 = 6 + 9
5x = 15
x = 3


Let's look at another one like this:
 

3y - y - 5 + 8 = 17

We must first combine 3y and -y then combine -5 and 8.

2y +3 = 17

Now finish...

2y + 3 - 3 = 17 - 3
2y = 14
y = 7
