A Least Common Multiple
(
LCM)
is a whole number
that is the same product
of two or more numbers.

Remember:
A MULTIPLE of a number is a product of that number

Multiples of 5 = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30...
(think of counting by the number)

Do You Get It ?

The Least Common Multiple of 6 and 8

Multiples of 6 = 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48...
Multiples of 8 = 8, 16, 24

Meaning:
24 is the first, and LEAST,
common multiple of 6 and 8

Are You Still With Me ?

You can use LCM to help solve problems

A U.S. Presidential election is held every 4 years.
A U.S. Senatorial election is every 6 years.
If both elections were this year, how many more years will it be until they both have elections together again?

Multiples of 4 = 4, 8, 12
Multiples of 6 = 6, 12, 18, 24, 30...

LCM = 12

It would be another 12 years before there is a Presidential and US Senatorial election in the same year.

Upon further review:

To find the Least Common Multiple
(
LCM)

Multiply (or count by) each number.
Those are the 'multiples'.

The LOWEST Matching (or Common)
Multiples are then known as your
LCM !
