A Ratio is the comparing of two quantities.
Ratios can be written 3 different ways A ratio of 3 boys to 5 girls can look like:
3 to 5
3 : 5
If there were 7 hats and 3 shoes
The ratio would be--- 7 to 3 it could also look like 7 : 3 or
The number of HATS MUST BE listed first
If there were 9 scarves and 2 gloves
The ratio would be--- 9 : 2 it could also look like 9 to 2 or
The number of SCARVES MUST BE listed first
If 6 out of 10 kids like spaghetti
The ratio would be--- it could also look like 6 to 10 or 6 : 10
BUT: like fractions, ratios can be reduced !
reduces to
it could also look like 3 to 5 or 3 : 5
The number of KIDS LIKING SPAGHETTI MUST BE listed first
Upon further review:
RATIOS compare 2 different amounts.
** Always list the amounts ** in the order as they are listed Ex: 5 cars to 2 trucks MUST BE 5 : 2 (NOT-- 2 : 5)
