In the
previous lesson, you learned that there are many times in a day you need
math! Let's take a typical day in a typical 5th graders life, and
where and when math is used!
Directions: Read each
description of the day, and try to solve the math problem; check your
answer by clicking on the picture.

You need to get to school by 7:00 AM for
track practice. It takes you 15 minutes to walk to
school, and 30 minutes to get ready (shower, eat, etc).
What time should you set your alarm to wake you up in order to
get to school by 7:00 AM? |
 |
| |
| Now you got to track practice, and you run
the 500m. Coach says you must shave 8 seconds off your
time to win the race. Your best time so far is 2minutes 29 seconds.
What time should you aim for? |
 |
| |
| Next you go to class.
Your teacher says you are going on 3 field trips next month, but
you have to pay for each one. The zoo will cost $4.50 per
student. The amusement park will cost $8.95 per student, and the
bowling trip will cost $6.00. Your parents want to pay for
these trips with one check. For how much should they
write the check? |
  |
| |
| You worked hard today at
school, and so you decided to treat yourself to an ice cream
sundae on the way home. The basic hot fudge sundae is
$2.50, but you want two additional items, bananas that add $.50
and butterscotch topping that adds $.75. You give the
clerk a $5 bill, and she gives you back a quarter. You
think you got cheated, but you're not sure. How can you check? |
 |
| |
| You finally get home, and your
older brother wants you to help him with his weights. He
is using 25 lbs. and he asks you to add 5 lbs at a time.
He requests this 4 times total. How much weight is he
lifting after your "help"? |
