Work with Others to Solve Problems
Practice

Before we can practice, you need to answer this first question?  What does collaborate mean?

Now we can continue with the practice!   Let's look at a possible assignment and examine the best way to do the task.

You are going to have a geometry test next week, and your teacher put you in a group of  5.  The group's assignment is:
Invent a game to help review the properties of polygons.
How do you go about this assignment?  Where do you begin?

Let's  examine what needs to be done.

#1
  • Examine  three sided polygons: TRIANGLES
(then examine further the different types of triangles according to sides and angles)

  • Examine  four sided polygons: QUADRILATERALS
(then examine further the different types of quadrilaterals according to lengths of sides and angle measures)
  • Examine  five or more sided polygons: PENTAGONS, HEXAGONS, etc.
(then examine further the different types: regular or irregular?)

#2
  • Plan your game to best review the tested material.

You can see there is much work to be done, and now you have two choices: you can work together, or you can work alone.  Most of the time it is easier to work together (collaboratively) and assign each person a task.  There are many ways to divide the tasks.  Can you think of a few different ways?

HINT:  It usually helps to have assigned jobs to each person when working as a group. Two suggested jobs are found here:
Job #1: Leader  (If you cannot agree on this person, perhaps draw names of those interested.)
Job #2: Recorder (This person writes down who does what job.)

Let's practice with that problem. (It should be easy because it is somewhat started).

Get together with at least one other person to write down the possible jobs needed to complete the assignment. Remember to decide:

  • what polygons should be reviewed, and

  • how is your game going to be organized?

REMEMBER:  Sometimes it is necessary to work with other people (work collaboratively) to solve a problem.  Your answer depends upon their work, so you must work together.
