MULTIPLICATION

Let's review the multiplication rules for decimals:

  • count the number of decimal places in each of the factors
  • multiply  as usual, without putting any decimal points in the partial products
  • add the decimal places of the two factors together, then have that many decimal places in your new product!

Before you try some REAL problems, let's see if you understand the basic rules!

How many decimal places in 3.456?

How many decimal places in 800?

In 5.1 x 3.2, how many decimal places in the product?

Directions:

Copy the following problems on to your own piece of paper.  Remember that you need to write them vertically, and you should NOT line up the decimal points.  When you have all your answers, click on the link below to print out an answer sheet.  If you get any wrong, please check the explanation for that problem on the answer sheet.

1.)   8.3 x 5 = 2.)  4.45 x 3.9 =
3.)   10.07 x 3.04 = 4.)   15 x 2.1 =
5.)   0.98 x 0.31 = 6.)   11.1 x 0.08 =
