Remember: when asked to represent a problem situation, you have many choices of representation: algebraically, graphically, numerically  (with an equation or inequality), or verbally.  In the following problems, choose the best way to represent the problem, and then check your answer with the drop-down.  Solve the problem, and then click on the picture to check your answer.

 

Joan was 3 years older than her brother.  Joan is 19.  How old is her brother?

Ellen and Joey were playing a video game.  Joey finished the task in 1 hour 35 minutes.  Ellen finished in 80 minutes.  Who worked the fastest?

What is the median for this set of data:

     { 2, 3, 5, 3, 10, 8, 9 }

Dave, Jeff , Kevin, Jen, and Claire are in line.  The teacher said no boys should stand together, and Dave had to be first.  How many different combinations can there be?
