has a numerator
that is greater than its denominator.

An Improper Fraction 
can be turned into a MIXED NUMBER...
or
A MIXED NUMBER
can be turned into an Improper Fraction


A Mixed Number 
combines a whole number 
and a fraction.

An Improper Fraction 
can be changed to a Mixed Number
by dividing the numerator by the denominator

8/5  =  8 ÷ 5 = 1 r3

1 is the Whole Number
and the 'remainder 3'
becomes the numerator;
while the 5 stays as the denominator.

8/5  = 13/5

A Mixed Number 
can be changed to an Improper Fraction
by multiplying the denominator to the whole number,
then adding the product to the numerator.
The denominator stays as the denominator.

13/5
5 x 1 = 5 + 3 = 8/5

Do You Get It ?

9/2 is an Improper Fraction.
It can become a Mixed Number by:
9 ÷ 2 = 4r1....

9/2  =  4 1/2

7 3/4 is a Mixed Number.
It can become an Improper Fraction by:
4 x 7 = 28 + 3 = 31 .....  31/

7 3/4 = 31/4

 

Upon further review:

An Improper Fraction 
can be changed to a Mixed Number
by dividing the numerator by the denominator.

OR

A Mixed Number 
can be changed to an Improper Fraction
by multiplying the denominator to the whole number,
then adding the product to the numerator.
The denominator stays as the denominator.
