Improper to Mixed
Lesson

A PROPER fraction has a value less than or equal to 1.

An IMPROPER fraction has a numerator greater than its denominator.  e.g.  7    (7 > 5)
                               5

A MIXED NUMBER combines a whole number and a fraction.
      e.g.   3

In this lesson, you will learn :

  • that both Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers represent values greater than 1 whole.
  • when they both represent the same value, you can change one to the other.

Let's learn how to make that change.   Let's start with changing improper fractions to mixed numbers.

To Change an Improper Fraction to a Mixed Number, divide the  numerator by the denominator!

Step one:

Divide the numerator(9) by the denominator(7)

Step two:

7 divides into 9 once with a remainder of 2

Step Three: The quotient(1) is the whole number.  The remainder(2) becomes the numerator in the fraction and the denominator(7) stays the same!

To change a Mixed Number to an Improper Fraction, multiply the denominator by the whole number and add the numerator.  Put that answer above the original denominator and you have the improper fraction!

Step one:

Multiply the denominator(4) by the whole number(2)  4 x 2 = 8

Step two:

Add the numerator(3) to that number(8) 8 + 3 = 11
(new numerator)

Step Three:

Put the new numerator(11) over the old denominator(4)

11
4

Let's Practice!
