Ordering Numbers to Millions

Remember in the previous lesson you learned how to compare large numbers? In this lesson you will learn how to order  whole numbers when you are given a list.

Sometimes it is important to put a list of numbers in descending (going down) or ascending (going up) order.  But it is easy, because you can use the same rules that you used for comparing numbers!  Let's quickly review the steps:

Step one: Look at the place value. Identify the ones place in each number.

Step two:  Arrange the numbers in vertical (that's one on top of the other) form.  Line up the number by place values, starting with the one's place.

Step three: Begin at the greatest place value (furthest to the left), compare the digits.

Step four: If there is only one number that HAS that largest place value, it is automatically the largest. Otherwise if the digits from  left to right are the same, keep going until one differs.  At that point, the one containing the larger digit is the larger number.

Are you confused?
That's lots of words!

Then let's try a chart!

Here's the chart to get you organized!   If you need to put numbers in order, put them in the correct place values below and then compare!

Millions , Hundred-
Thousands
Ten-
Thousands
Thousands , Hundreds Tens Ones

Let's try one!  Put the following numbers in order, from largest to smallest.

8,567,905                   8,568,890                      7,899,999

Use the chart!!!!!

Millions , Hundred-
Thousands
Ten-
Thousands
Thousands , Hundreds Tens Ones
8, 5 6 7, 9 0 5
8, 5 6 8, 8 9 0
7, 8 9 9, 9 9 9

Now use the rules:

  • Compare all three numbers in the millions place (the largest place value in these three numbers).
    • The third number is the smallest, because 7,000,000 <8,000,000.  Now we are down to two numbers to order.
  • Because the two top numbers are the same in the next two place values, you need to go to the thousands place, where they differ,  to compare.
    • Because 7,000 < 8,000   the second number is the greatest.
  • So the correct order from largest to smallest is:

8,568,890 > 8,567,905 > 7,899,999

So remember the chart when putting large numbers in order!
