Translate a Diagram
to an Expression

Sometimes a picture or diagram gives you all the information you need to solve a problem. You just need to know how to translate that information to an expression.

Example 1:   A rectangle has a perimeter of 48 inches and the length is 14 inches; find the width.

We can translate that diagram into this equation:

Because I know the perimeter of a rectangle is equal to the sum of all four sides......

P = w + w + l + l
48 = w + w + 14 + 14
48 = w + w + 28
48 - 28 = w + w + 28 - 28
20 = w + w
20 = 2w
20/2 = 2w/2
10 inches = w

Example 2:   Using a protractor, find the measure of angle a.

We can translate this picture into a numeric expression also by measuring the angle with the protractor.      m<a = 65°

So remember to use the information given to translate diagrams or pictures to numeric expressions.
