Many times in Math, you are asked to "Explain your answer".  That's when it is important to use the "right words"!  The "right words" are math vocabulary words, so let's learn some!

First let's separate them into different areas, but don't worry, we won't use all of them right now!

Vocabulary Words for Grade Five Math
ALGEBRA expression, constant , doubling, variable
GEOMETRY types of triangles according to angles: acute, obtuse, and right, congruent, corresponding angles and sides, irregular and regular polygons, line of symmetry, similar triangles
GRAPHING first quadrant, ordered pairs,
NUMBER SENSE

composite and prime, greatest common factor (gcf), least common multiple (lcm), order of operations, place value to millions, ratio, proper and improper fractions, lowest terms, mixed numbers,
STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY certainty and uncertainty, conclusion, decrease and increase, mean, outcome ,sample space, probability, outcome, prediction

Let's discuss when you would use which words!  Let's look at some examples:

Here's a sample problem:

and the math  words you MIGHT use!

#1: Name the following triangle, according to its angles: Since this is according to angles, you are using acute, obtuse, or right as possible names.

#2:  You toss a die 100 times.  What is the probability you will toss a "6"?

Use the Statistics and Probability words: sample space, outcome, prediction,  and of course probability!
#3:   Add 8  ¼ + 7 ⅜ Use greatest common factor, mixed number, least common multiple, lowest terms, greatest common factor
#4: Play a game of Battleship Use ordered pair, first quadrant
#5:  John is 3 years older than his brother Joe.  Express John's age in terms of Joe's age. Use expression, variable, and constant.
