In many word problems, it is necessary to add Mixed Numbers.  In this lesson, we will review the definition of Mixed Numbers and learn how to add them.

A Mixed Number is a quantity greater than one, that is made up of a proper fraction and a whole number.

Examples are:  2¼,    1⅞,  51½, 156¾

Which of the following are Mixed Numbers?

And how do you add Mixed Numbers?

Step one:

Add the whole numbers.

Step two:

Combine the proper fractions; if they have different (unlike)  denominators, you must find the common (like)  denominator first.

When you add fractions you only add the numerators, NOT the denominators!

Example 1: Adding Mixed Numbers with like denominators

Example 2: Adding Mixed Numbers with unlike denominators
Must find a common (like) denominator. (What is the least common multiple of 4 and 3?  12)
Because   and so... combine numerators and combine whole numbers...

Example 3: Adding Mixed Numbers with unlike denominators and sum (answer) needs to be simplified
Must find a common (like) denominator. (What is the least common multiple of 5 and 10?  10)
Because ......combine whole numbers and combine numerators....
Because you can't have an improper fraction in the answer, so change improper to mixed.
is the answer in lowest terms!
