When
adding and subtracting decimal numbers we want to be sure to
line up the decimals.
This assures us that we are
keeping the place values lined up in each number.
|
Example 1:
Add: 13.08 + 7.456 |
|
Notice
that we add a zero above the 6 so that there is
something in the thousandths place in the first
number (we can always add zeros without changing the value of the number). |
|
Example 2:
Add: 0.00456 + 5.93 |
Example
3:
Add: 56.076 +
12.4 + 0.00685 |
|
0.00456 |
|
+ 5.93000 |
|
5.93456 |
|
| 56.07600 |
| 12.40000 |
| +
0.00685 |
| 68.48285 |
|

|
Example 4: Subtract:
192.78 - 1.003 |
|
Notice
that we add a zero above the 3 so that there is
something is the thousandths place in the first
number (we have
to subtract the three from something). |
|

| Example
5: Subtract: 0.04873 -
0.000348 |
|
0.048730 |
| -
0.000348 |
|
0.048382 |
|

|

Remember
to line up the decimals when adding and subtracting decimal numbers!
