An algebraic expression  is a phrase that contains one or more variables and it does not contain an equal sign.

x +6 is an algebraic expression

It many also contain numbers and operating symbols such as plus and minus signs. It shows a relationship between quantities and one or more variables.

In algebraic expressions, a variable is a letter, such as x or y.

y + 7

y
is the variable

These letters are called variables because the numbers they represent can vary. They can stand for any one of many possible numerical values in the expression.

Algebraic expressions represent verbal expressions.

Statement

Algebraic Expression

Mary weighs 10 pounds less than Tom. If T= Tom's weigh, than T-10 represents Mary's weight.

Now, let's look at another example

       Algebraic expressions represent verbal expressions.

Statement

Algebraic Expression

Phil has d dollars in the bank. Nicole has 2 times as much money as Phil. How much money does Nicole have?

2d or 2 x d

Remember: An algebraic expression is only a phase, so it does not contain an equal sign.
