An argument is a discussion in which a disagreement is expressed.  It is important to have facts to support your argument.

In math you can explain an argument by drawing a picture or diagram.

Sometimes when you draw a picture, it makes it easier to solve a problem.

Example
Frank and Nicole are trying to determine what the last color will be in the scarf. The scarf has 11 stripes.  The first strip is purple.  The second stripe is green.  The third stripe is pink.  The pattern is repeated on the scarf.  Nicole thinks the last color will be purple.  Frank thinks the last color will be green.  Determine which color will be the last stripe?

Step 1 - Draw a picture of the scarf.  Follow the pattern in the question.

The last color in the scarf is green.
Frank is correct by saying the last color is green.

Example
Jim is trying to determine what his score will be for the first round of darts.  Jim threw 4 darts at the dart board.  One dart landed in the inner circle worth 50 points, 2 darts landed in the middle circle for 25 points, and his last dart landed in the outer circle for 10 points. Determine what Jim's score will be for round one?

Step 1 - Draw a picture of the dart board.

  50 1st dart
  25 2nd dart
  25 3rd dart
+10 4th dart
110

Jim's score for round one is 110 points.

Remember:
When you are drawing a picture, you can use drawings that don't have much details.
