Basic Shapes

 

What is combining basic shapes?

Combining basic shapes is to join or link different shapes closely together.

Example-

Carol has a square piece of paper. It measures 7 inches wide and 7 inches long. If she tapes another square that measures 7 inches wide and 7 inches long to the first square, what will the dimensions of this new shape be?

The new dimensions of the shape will be a 7 inch wide and 14 inch long rectangle.

What is subdividing basic shapes?

Subdividing basic shapes  is to divide a shape into smaller parts.
Example-

Chelsea has a rectangular piece of cloth. It measures 6 inches wide and 14 inches long. If she cuts 8 inches of length off the cloth, what will the dimensions of this new shape be?

The new dimensions of the shape will be a 6 inch square.
