Combining
basic shapes is to join or link
different shapes closely together.
Example-
Carol has a square piece of paper. It
measures 7 inches wide and 7 inches long. If she tapes another
square that measures 7 inches wide and 7 inches long to the first
square, what will the dimensions of this new shape be?
The
new dimensions of the
shape will be a 7 inch wide and 14 inch long rectangle.
What is subdividing basic shapes?
Subdividing
basic shapes is to divide a shape into smaller parts.
Example-
Chelsea has a rectangular piece of cloth. It
measures 6 inches wide and 14 inches long. If she cuts 8 inches of
length off the cloth, what will the dimensions of this new shape be?
The
new dimensions of the
shape will be a 6 inch square.
Remember:
You can combine
and subdivide basic shapes to
form different shapes.
