Circumference is the word used to describe the distance around the outside of a circle.

A circle is a closed curve that is made of points that are the same distance from the center.

Some Parts of a Circle

Example 1:

Fred, the amazing elephant, is walking on a circular ball as part of his circus act. The diameter of the ball is 10 feet. What is the circumference of the ball?

The circumference of a circle is approximately three times the diameter.

The diameter is 10 feet. 10 feet x 3 = approximately 30 feet.

Circumference = approximately 30 feet

Example 2: using string to estimate the circumference of a circle.

Step 1:

  • Trace  a circle on a piece of paper.
  • Place a piece of string around the edge of the circle.
