Commutative Property

Changing the order of the addends does not change the sum.

(5 + 3) + 2 = 10 (3 + 5) + 2 = 10
8  + 2 =10 8  + 2 =10
Think: "order."

Changing the order of the factors does not change the product.

(4 x 5) x 3 = 60 3 x (5 x 4) = 60
20 x 3 = 60 3 x 20 = 60
Think: "order."

Example

(4 x 3) x 2 = 2 x (3 x 4)

12 x 2 = 2  x 12

24 = 24

Remember:
  • In addition, the order in which numbers are added does not change the sum.

  • In multiplication,  the order in which numbers are multiplied does not change the product.
