Sometimes when problem solving it is important to know how to convert measures.  We can use proportional reasoning to do this.

Remember proportions are equivalent fractions!

Boy doing mathLet's try one!!!

How many inches are in one yard?

We know there are 12 inches in 1 foot so we can write the fraction

We also know there are 3 ft in 1 yard...

Using proportional reasoning we can solve how many inches would be in 3 feet (which is one yard)...

There are 36 inches in 1 yard.

Let's look at another example.

Lady drinking waterMrs. Thomas drinks 2 quarts of water every day.

How many cups of water is that?

We know that 1 quart is 2 pints so...

We also know that 1 pint is 2 cups so...

There are 8 cups in 2 quarts.
