DIVISION

In this lesson you will learn how to divide a decimal number by a whole number.

Let's first review some terms used in division.

Basically, you follow the same rules for dividing decimals by a whole number, as you would for dividing a whole number by a whole number.  Remember the five steps for dividing?

When you have a decimal in the dividend:

  • at first, just ignore the decimal point and divide as usual
  • then if you "run out of digits" in the dividend, just annex zeros until it comes out even, or can be rounded to the hundredths place.
  • then bring the decimal point straight up in to the quotient.

Here's your first example:

At first, just ignore it and divide as usual.

Then if you "run out of digits" in the dividend, just annex zeros until it comes out even, or to the hundredths place. (You didn't run out of digits in this problem; it came out evenly.)
Then bring the decimal point straight up into the quotient.

Then check your answer by multiplying. (Remember the rules for multiplying decimals!)

Now here is a more difficult problem, where you do need to annex zeroes.

At first, just ignore the decimal point and divide as usual.  But it doesn't come out even; you have a remainder of 7.

Then if you "run out of digits" in the dividend, just annex zeros until it comes out even.  In this case, you only have to annex one zero for it to come out even.

Then bring the decimal point straight up into the quotient.

Then check your answer by multiplying. (Remember the rules for multiplying decimals!) Your product is equal to the dividend, so it checks!
