There are many ways to divide fractions:

 

In this lesson, we will explore the third method: measurement.  How can we use a ruler to divide fractions?  Let's see!!

 

Suppose you have the following problem:

3 ÷ ¼ =

  • Think of a ruler. 
  • Think of 3 inch mark on that ruler.
  • Think of the ¼ marks between the end (0) and the 3 inch mark.
  • How many sections do you have?
