Estimate is to find an answer that is close to the exact answer.

Estimate quotients before you divide.

Find where the quotient begins.

Estimate: 161 5.

Try:	dividing hundreds
	161	5 5 > 1 not enough hundreds
	161	5 5 < 16 enough tens
So,	the quotient begins in the tens place.

Since you are estimating, write zeros for the other digits.

Estimate: 34.2 5.

Think:	What number times 5 has a product close to 34.2?
	? x 5 = 30
	6 x 5 = 30
So,	34.2	5 is about 6.

Estimate: 295 7.

Think:	What number times 7 has a product close to 29?
	? x 7 = 28
	4 x 7 = 28
So,	29	7 is about 4
Therefore,

Remember: Think of basic division facts, such as 25

5 = 5 and 20

5 = 4. Using basic facts to estimate makes the problem easier to solve.
