Estimating Large Numbers

Large numbers can be difficult to work with. Sometimes you don't need to have an exact number, but a number that is close to the exact number.

Estimating is one way to find a number that's easier to work with.

Million is a large number that is hard to count.
When dealing with millions sometimes you need to estimate the number of items.

millions hundred thousands ten thousands thousand hundreds tens ones
1 0 0 0 0 0 0

Example One

How many stars are in the sky on a starry night?

If you were to look at the sky on a starry night, it would be hard to count the total number of stars.

It would be impossible to count all the stars in the sky.
You need to estimate about how many stars are in the sky.

You can estimate and say that there are more than a million stars in the sky.

Example Two

If you filled a grocery bag full of Hershey Kisses, how much candy is there in a grocery bag?

You can count the number of candy in a grocery bag.

It would not be impossible to count all the candy in the grocery bag.

You do not need to estimate how much candy there is in a grocery bag.

Since you do not need to estimate, you can get an exact number, and see that a million Hershey Kisses would not fit in a grocery bag.

Remember:
If an item is to large to count, you need to estimate to find an approximate number.
