Fractions
, decimals, and percents are 3 ways to show parts of a whole.

e.g.  ¾ = 0.75 = 75%

(Different names for the same amount!)

Sometimes in math problems, it is necessary to state the same amount in different ways.  Any given amount can be expressed as a fraction, a decimal, and a percent.

Example  1

 Write 50% as a fraction and decimal.

50 %

0.50

Example 2

     Write 0.23 as a fraction and percent.

0.23

 23 %

Example 3

Write

as a percent.

One way to solve is to use proportion.

4 x n = 3

4n = 300

n = 75

So,

75%

 Another way to solve is to divide.

So,

=75%

Happy Face Love In EyesRemember: percents mean per 100.

Example 4

Describe the shaded portion as a fraction, decimal, and percent:

What do you know? 50 out of 100

How would you write this as a fraction? 50/100 = 1/2

How would you write this as a decimal? 0.50

How would you write this as a percent? 50%

Example 5

Describe the shaded portion as a fraction, decimal, and percent:

What do you know? 10 out of 100

How would you write this as a fraction? 10/100 = 1/10

How would you write this as a decimal? 0.10

How would you write this as a percent? 10%

Remember:
Writing zeros to the right of the decimal part of a number does not change its value, e.g., 3.5 = 3.50 = 3.500
