A
Greatest Common Factor
(GCF)

is a number
that divides into two numbers.
You can use a GCF
to write a fraction in lowest terms.

For example:

36/90

36 has factors of
1x36, 2x18, 3x12, 4x9, and 6x6;
so we say its factors are =
1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36

and

90 has factors of
1x90, 2x45, 3x30, 5x18, 6x15, and 9x10;
so we say its factors are =
1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 15, 18, 30, 45, 90

The factors of 36 and 90 that are the same are highlighted in RED.

The Greatest Common Factor of 36 and 90 is 18

You then would ÷ 36 by 18, and 90 by 18.
36 ÷ 18 = 2
90 ÷ 18 = 5

Having 36/90 reduce to 2/5

Do You Get It ?

A monkey ate 24 of 30 bananas.
What would be the fraction of bananas eaten in lowest terms?

GCF:
24 = 1x24, 2x12, 3x8, 4x6
30 = 1x30, 2x15, 3x10, 5x6

6 is the GCF

So,
24 ÷ 6 = 4
30 ÷ 6 = 5

Meaning:   24/30 reduces to  4/5 in lowest terms.
The monkey ate
4/5 of the bananas

Upon further review:

To find the Greatest Common factor
(GCF)

find all the ways to multiply
two numbers together to get to your first number.
Then do the same to get your second number..

The factors that Match are your Common Factors,
The Common Factor that is the GREATEST
is your Greatest Common Factor (GCF)

Let's Practice
