Guess and Check
Practice
Topic Index | Grade 6 Math | Intermediate Test Prep | StudyZone

If you don't know how to solve a problem, make an educated guess at the answer. Check your guess. If you're wrong, use what you've learned in checking your guess to make a better guess. Continue to guess, check, and modify until you find the answer.

Solve using the guess, test, and revise strategy.

1. At the sport shop, an order comes in for 18 baseball hats. Some of the hats are $7 and some are $9. The order's total is $142. How many hats are $9 hats?

2. There are 141 items to choose from in the catalog. There are twice as many tools as there are clothing items. How many pieces of equipment are in the catalog?

3. At the school cafeteria, pizza and a glass of orange juice together cost $1.35. Pizza is twice as expensive as orange juice. What is the cost of each?

4. Tom played darts and the target had 3 sections: 30 points, 14 points, and 8 points. He took 5 tries, but missed the target twice. His score was 46. What sections did he hit?

5. Lisa has $1.55 in nickels and quarters in her piggy bank. If there are 11 coins, how many quarters does Lisa have?

6. There are 171 books on 13 shelves in Mrs. Carroll's classroom. Some shelves have 15 books each and the rest have 12 books each. How many shelves have 12 books?

Remember: How can you use each guess to help you decide on a better next guess?

If the amount is too high, try fewer. If too low, try more.
