Mathematics is used to solve problems situations that occur outside of math class!

Let's look at some examples!

Example 1 - logical reasoning

Mary, Faith, and Lillian are all in the same classroom. Each reads a different story to another class. To find out which story each person reads, read the clues and fill out the table.

Facts:
Faith's story did not have a wolf in it.

Mary's story did not have a number in the title.

The Three Bears

Three Little Pigs

Little Red Riding Hood

Use the facts to find the answer.

Example 2 - Gym Class

Outside of gym class, Nicole had to do push-ups for one week. She collected the data and made a line graph.

How many push-ups did Nicole do on Thursday?

Example 3 - Scale Model

A car model was built using the scale of 1:24. If the length of the bumper of the model is 3 inches, what is the length of the bumper of the actual car in feet?

Setting up the proportion:

x = 24 ∙ 3

x = 72 inches

We then change 72 inches to 6 feet.

Example 4 - Sales Tax

Kendra bought a digital camera for $189.99 and a case for $18.95. With a 8% tax rate what was his total cost?

Mathematics is not just found in math class, it is found outside of the classroom!
