Math has special vocabulary words that
help you explain and understand
problems and solutions.
 

algebraic expression
is a phrase that contains one or more variables and it does not contain an equal sign.

x +6 is an algebraic expression

algebraic equation
is a number sentence that contain the = symbol.

y + 7 = 10 is an algebraic equation

inequalities
 Number sentences that contain the symbols <, >, ≤, ≥,

x + 3 ≤ 15 is an inequality

Area
is the number of square units needed to cover a flat surface.
You find the area by counting the squares.

Area = 4 square units.

	The formula for area of a rectangle is found by multiplying it's length by it's width. A = l X w
	The formula for area of a square is found by multiplying side times side. A = s2

Capacity
is the amount a container can hold.

Milliliter (mL)
is used to measure the capacities of small containers

Liter (L)
is used to measure the capacities of larger containers

absolute value
 The absolute value of a number is its distance from zero. 

  |7| = 7  The absolute value of 7 equals 7.

  |-7| = 7  The absolute value of -7 equals 7.
 

Rounding
 is one way to estimate.

If the digit to the right of the place one is rounding to is     less than 5, round down    ;
      if it is 5 or greater, round up    .

 

additive inverse
is known as the opposite of a number.
 
The additive inverse of 2 is - 2.
 

Commutative Property
is the property which states that for all real numbers a, b, and c, their sum is always the same, regardless of their order.

Associative Property
is the property which states that for all real numbers a, b, and c, their sum is always the same, regardless of their grouping:
(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)

Identity Property
Zero added to any number always returns the original number.
