Measurement problems can be related to other areas such as literature, science, and social studies.

Literature can be used to teach measurement.

There are some books that introduce the concept of area.
Standard and nonstandard units of measurement are used to investigate the properties of areas and ways of measuring them.

Read the book to your class and have the students complete the math problems in the book as you read it.

Science

In science class the students design a flower garden with an area of 12 square units. They draw different rectangles on graph paper finding the area in square feet. Then organize and record their data in a table.

Area is the number of square units needed to cover a flat surface.

Width
(in feet)
Length
(in feet)
Area
(in square feet)
1 12 12
2 6 12
3 4 12

Mapping Areas

Use measurement to find the areas of the states of Colorado, South Dakota, and Wyoming. They are almost rectangles, so begin by drawing rectangular states on graph paper. Use a map to find its length and width in miles. Then organize and record their data in a table.

State Width
(miles)
Length
(miles)
Area
(square miles)
Colorado 280 380 106,400
South Dakota 210 380 79,800
Wyoming 280 360 100,800
