The Identity Element always returns the input unchanged.

What number always gives you your original number back no matter what you multiply it by?

X * ? = X

X * 1 = X

If you guessed ONE you are right! Any number times one equals the original number.

8 * 1 = 8 1 * 10 = 10
1 * 54  = 54 3.4 * 1 = 3.4
1 * -5 = -5  - 102.86 * 1 = -102.86

The "I" in Identity Element gives us a hint to its use. Think "I have a unique Identity and I don't want to change it!"
