To multiply decimal numbers

Line up the two numbers as you would whole numbers.
(The decimals do not need to be lined up.)

                           Multiply normally

Count how many digits are to the right of both decimals
and move your decimal point to the left that many places
                              in your answer.

                          8.09
                      x  11.5
                         4045
                         8090
                       80900
                      93.035

                         0.092
                        x   0.3
                       0.0276

We moved the decimal 3 places to the left in our answer because there are 3 digits to the right of the decimal in our factors. We moved the decimal 4 places to the left in our answer because there are 4 digits to the right of the decimal in our factors.

Let's Practice!

Example Solution

49.3
 x  0.91

49.3
 x  0.91
493
 44370
44.863
Since there are 3 digits to the right of the decimal we move the decimal 3 places to the left in our answer.

603.9
x  0.07

6.039
x  0.07
0.42273
Since there are 5 digits to the right of the decimal we move the decimal 5 places to the left in our answer.

582
x  1.03

582
x  1.03

1746
0000
58200
599.46
Since there are 2 digits to the right of the decimal we move the decimal 2 places to the left in our answer.

Remember:

Multiply decimal numbers normally then count the digits to the right of the decimals.

This is the number of places you will move the decimal to the left in your answer.
