Using Pictures & Diagrams
        
to help solve a problem

When looking to solve a math problem,
you may sometimes want to refer 
to any Pictures or Diagrams
the question provides
to help you answer the questions.

Example 1:

Question:
Simon has to name all the quadrilaterals he can think of.
He looks at the diagram above to help him solve this problem.
What are the different types of quadrilaterals he can come up with?

Think:
What are the different types of quadrilaterals?

* Look at the diagram.
* Notice that "Quadrilaterals" is shaded Blue.
* See that "Quadrilaterals" is a type of "Polygon".
   and that there are arrows coming off of the "Quadrilateral" shape.
* Notice that there are 4 other types of shapes
   shaded Blue and have arrows coming from the "Quadrilaterals" shape.
* They are Parallelograms, Rectangles, Trapezoids, and Squares


Answer: 
Simon finds that there are 4 types of Quadrilaterals
They are parallelograms, rectangles, trapezoids, and squares.  

Example 2:


         $5.00       $18.00        $23.00      $35.00      $58.00

Question:
MaryJo has kept track of the money she has saved for the past five months.
She has a total of $58 saved by the end of May.
How much money did she save from February to May?

Think:
What did she have saved in February?
How much did she have saved in May?


* Look at the graph.
* Notice that she had $18 saved in February and $58 saved at the end of May.
* In order to find the amount saved in that period of time she must find the difference.
* 58-18 = 40.   


Answer: 
Mary Jo has saved $40 from February to May
