Keep in mind that often in math it is helpful to use pictures, diagrams or patterns to find a solution.  Also remember to:

Gold Button  Read the problem carefully.

Gold Button  Think about ways in which you might be able to use
    pictures, diagrams, or patterns in working through the
    problem.

Gold Button  Draw out the parts of the problem that can be
    represented graphically.

Gold Button  Solve the problem.

Try the following problems on scrap paper.

Question 1

At the pizza shop, these toppings are available - pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, olives, and peppers.  How many different two-topping pizzas can be made?

A pair of salmon were put into the lake.  If the number of salmon in the lake doubles at the end of each year, how many years will it take for the number of salmon in the lake to be greater than 2,000?

Question 3

The presidential elections are always held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.  On what dates can the election take place?

Question 4

Use cubes (two orange, two green, two yellow, two purple) and these directions to build a 2 x 2 cube:

1.  The two green cubes touch on a face.

2.  The orange, yellow, and purple cubes never share a face with a cube of the same color.

3.  One orange cube and one yellow cube each touch a face of a green cube.
