Using the Powers of 10
make it easier to write larger numbers

Exponents are shorthand for multiplication

1,000 = 10 x 10 x 10 = 103

We say:
"One thousand equals Ten to the 3rd power."
(10 is the BASE NUMBER, 3 is the EXPONENT)

105 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 100,000

We say:
"Ten to the 5th power equals One hundred thousand."
(10 is the BASE NUMBER, 5 is the EXPONENT)

You determine the "power" (the exponent) by the number of zeros

10,000 has 4 zeros
so it is:  104

Exponents are shorthand for multiplication

10,000 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 104

1,000,000 has 6 zeros
so it is:   106

Exponents are shorthand for multiplication

1,000,000 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 106

- or -

When given the "power", simply add that number zeros to the number

104 means to add on 4 zeros
          10,000

103 means to add on 3 zeros
          1,000

Upon further review:

The "power" (exponent)
is the number that tells how many times
the base number is multiplied.

100,000 = 105

Exponents are shorthand for multiplication: 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10
