As you read each problem, ask questions to help solve the problem.

 

 
Example 1:

The Rodeo Ranch offers 3 horseback riding classes daily.  Each class holds 12 people.  Classes are held Monday through Saturday.  How many people can take horseback riding lessons in a week?

                 

 

 

               

 

What do you know?
  • 3 classes a day
  • each class holds 12 people
  • classes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday

What do you need to find?

  • Number of people who can take classes in one week.

How can you solve this problem?

    3 classes x 6 days = 18 classes
    18 classes x 12 people = 216 people

Answer: 216 people

 

 

Example 2:

Four friends shared the cost of renting a motor scooter.  It cost $20 an hour.  They rented it for 5 hour.  How much did each of them pay?

 

 

 

        

 

What do you know?
  • 4 friends shared the cost of renting a motor scooter
  • cost $20 an hour
  • rent for 5 hours

What do you need to find?

  • The amount that each person paid.

How can you solve this problem?

    $20 x 5 hours = $100
    $100 / 4 = $25 each

Answer: $25 each

 

Example 3:


Faith's family is going to Disney for the week.  The cost of the hotel is $127 a night.  How much will it cost to stay for one week?

 

                      

What do you know?
  • Faith's family is going to Disney for a week.
  • a week equals 7 days
  • hotel costs $127 a night

What do you need to find?

  • The amount it costs to stay at Disney for a week.

How can you solve this problem?

    $127 x 7 = $889

Answer: $889
