Sometimes you use mathematics to show and understand social phenomena.

The sixth graders are going on a field trip.  There are 78 students in all 3 classes. 
A bus will hold 60 students. 
How many buses will they need?

Since 1 bus holds 60 students,
they will need 2 buses.
The second bus won't be full, so divide the students more equally for comfort.

 

There are 28 students going on a camping trip. 
Each tent holds 5 people. 
How many tents do they need?

Since each tent holds 5
people, the students will need 6 tents.  5 tents will be full.
One tent will only have 3 students on it.

 

Nicole is having an anniversary party.  She is inviting 29 guests.  If each table seats 6 people.  How many tables will be need?

Since each table seats 6 guests, Nicole will need 5 tables.  4 tables will be full.  One table will have only 5 guests.
