Ready to try your new skills?  Let's review the steps.

Step one:

Find a common denominator for the proper fractions.

Step two:

Ask yourself the question: in the fractions with LIKE denominators, is the top number's numerator greater than the bottom number's numerator?  If yes, go to step three, if no, some borrowing and renaming must be done on the top number.

Step three:

In the proper fractions, subtract the numerators, and then subtract the whole numbers.  Put the difference in lowest terms if possible.

DIRECTIONS:   Answer the following questions using this problem:

The first step is to find the common denominator. It is

Using that common denominator, what is the equivalent fraction for the first number?

Using that common denominator, what is the equivalent fraction for the second number?

Since 8 < 9 , what must happen next?

What is the difference (answer)?
