You can verify a math statement or answer by using examples or models
of the problem.

For example:


Mrs. Carroll wants to give
2 pens to each of the 15 students in her class.  She decided that she will need 30 pens.  Make a model to show this answer is correct.

If each student gets 2 pens, you can count to see Mrs. Carroll will need 30 pens in all.

 

Steve counted the money
in his piggy bank.
He had
3 quarters,
             3 dimes,
             2 nickels and
             4 pennies.

He said he had $1.19.  Make a model with coins to show his answer is correct.

 Chelsea was solving an addition problem.
She needed to add:

     
       34 + 22 = 56

She used place value blocks to
show her answer was correct.

Each day Lisa spends 5 more minutes practicing lacrosse.  If she practices lacrosse for 20 minutes on Monday, how long does she practice lacrosse on Friday?

Lisa practices for 40 minutes on Friday.
