A problem may tell you what happened at the end of a series of steps and ask you to find what happened at the beginning. To solve the problem, work backward step by step to the beginning.
 

Solve each problem using the working backwards strategy.

1. After finishing her shopping, Chelsea wants to have $25 left. She plans to buy sandals for $45 and a purse for $20. How much money does she need?
 

 

2. Hannah ordered 2 suits for $175 each and a pair of shoes. The total cost was $395. What was the cost of the shoes?
 

 

3. The final cost of Bob's bicycle was $194. This included a discount of $20.25 and tax of $12.25. What was the original price of the bicycle without the tax and discount?

 

 

 

4. At a bake sale Mrs. Smith sold 6 dozen cookies before lunch. After lunch, Mrs. Smith sold another 7 dozen cookies. When it was time to leave, they had 2 dozen cookies left. How many cookies did she have at the start of the bake sale?

 

 

 

5. On Monday, Courtney deposited $15. She deposited twice as much on Tuesday and Friday. How much money did Courtney deposit?

 

 

6. It snowed twice as much in January as in December. December had 1 inch less snowfall than March. March had 4 inches of snow. How much snow fell in January?

 

 

Remember: The answer is found by starting with the end result and working back to the beginning.
