Exact or Estimate?

Sometimes an exact answer is needed and an estimate is not close enough.

School cafeterias plan lunches for students based on what students like to eat. They keep track of lunches served, so they can order enough food.
How many pizza lunches should they plan for next week?
The table shows the number of lunches served in a week.

Day Lunch Number Served
Monday Chicken nuggets 295
Tuesday Pizza 343
Wednesday Hamburgers 189
Thursday Hotdogs 225
Friday Tacos 252
Step 1   What do you know?
You know how many students bought pizza lunches last week.

Step 2  Do you need an exact answer or will an estimate do? Estimate. You don't know exactly how many students will eat lunch.

Step 3  Decide whether your estimate should be greater than or less than the number of pizza lunches served last week.
To be sure that there will be enough lunches, the estimate should be greater than  343.

Exact or Estimate

The cafeteria provides milk with each meal. How many cartons of milk did the cafeteria need on Tuesday?
 343  Exact answer

Is your answer reasonable? Make estimates to compare to actual results.
