Customary Measurements
 is another system of measurement used in the United States to describe how long, how heavy, or how big something is. 
inch (in.) 12 inches (in) = 1 foot (ft) An inch is about the length from the tip of the thumb to the first knuckle.  

A Ruler is a Tool for Measuring Length

  The ruler is a standard mathematical tool. Always look carefully at the scale to determine if you are measuring in inches or centimeters.

 

You can use a ruler to measure an object to the
nearest inchhalf inch,  quarter inch, and eighth.

Quarter Inch

Eighth Inch

 

When measuring make sure you line the start of the ruler with the beginning of the object.

Measure the fish to the nearest half inch.

The fish measures about 1
