Matter is what all objects are made of. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. A gram (g) and a kilogram (kg) are metric units of mass.

Key Facts
1,000 grams (g) = 1 kilogram (kg)

Grams and kilograms are metric units used to measure mass.

A gram is used to measure lighter objects.

A kilogram is used to measure heavy objects.

A paper clip has a mass of about 1 gram. A science book has a mass of about 1 kilogram.

Look at each item below. Try to image picking up each item. Decide if the mass of each object is closer to the mass of a paper clip or the mass of a book.  Choose either g or kg, then check your answer.

To change units, think which unit is heavier. Then think about how the two units relate.

3.5 kg = ? g

A gram is less than a kilogram.
To change from kilograms to gram, multiply by 1,000.

Think: 3.5 x 1,000 = 3,500.
Move the decimal 3 places to the right.

So, 3.5 kg = 3,500 g

To change to a lesser unit multiply.

6,000 g = ? kg

A kilogram is greater than a gram.
To change grams to kilogram, divide by 1,000.

Think: 6,000 g divided by 1,000.
Move the decimal 3 places to the left.

So, 6,000 g = 6 kg

To change to a greater unit divide.

worm Remember:

When changing from greater to lesser units, multiply.

When changing from lesser to greater units, divide.
