This page will provide practice solving problems using the Distributive Property and finding patterns.  Click on the link below for practice using the first two mental math strategies.

Remember the Distributive Property "breaks down" the larger number into smaller, more manageable numbers.  Calculate in your head, using the smaller numbers, then combine them again!  Ready to try some?  Let's start with simple questions.

First, let's practice "breaking down"  large numbers!

large number

"broken down" number

83

34

Ready for some more problems?

problem

Use Distributive Property on which number?

Rewrite problem

Solve and check your answer!

35 x 6

9½ x 8

105 x 9

Now let's practice doing mental math by using a pattern.  Remember in the lesson you learned about at least two different patterns to use. Let's start with some simple problems.

problem

answer

50 x 7000

3200 ÷ 80

80 x 8000

Now let's practice doing mental math by using a different pattern.

problem

half of first factor

double the second factor

Solve and check your answer!

8 x 15

8 x 22

12 x 25

20 x 27

22 x 5
