A sample space is a set of all possible outcomes for an activity or experiment.

 

When finding the sample space list all the possible outcomes inside of brackets. { }

Rolling a die

{1,2,3,4,5,6}
Tossing a coin
Coin toss
{Heads, Tails}
Drawing a card from a standard deck
Deck of Cards
{52 cards}
Draw one marble from a jar
A jar with marbles in it.
{5 marbles}

 

Example
What is the sample size for drawing one block out of the box?

A box with blocks in it.

1. You have to count all the possible outcomes for the box.
2. After counting the blocks you can see that you could pick out a total of 8 blocks.
3.  The sample space for the following box is {8blocks}.

 

Worm Remember: A sample space includes ALL possible outcomes.
