Topic Index | Grade 5 Math | Intermediate Test Prep | StudyZone

A triangle has 3 sides and 3 angles.

The sum of the measures of the angles of any triangle always equals 180 degrees.

Let's take a look at classifying triangles.

You can classify triangles by their sides.

Equilateral triangle

Has 3 sides that are the same length.

Isosceles triangle

Has at least 2 sides that are the same length.

Scalene triangle

Has no sides that are the same length.

You can also classify triangles by their angles.

Right triangle

Has 1 angle that is a right angle (90 degrees).

Acute triangle

Has all 3 angles that are acute angle
(less than 90 degrees).

Obtuse triangle

Has 1 angle that is an
obtuse angle
(greater than 90 degrees).

Example

Classify the triangle by its sides and angle.

Scalene triangle

Reason: The triangle has no sides that are the same length.

Right triangle

Reason: The triangle has 1 angle that is a right angle (90 degrees).
