Different Types Of Slope:
Lesson Two
Topic Index | Grade 8 Math | Intermediate Test Prep | StudyZone

In this lesson we will introduce you to the
four different types of slope.

The best way to introduce these different types
of slope is through a diagram.....

So let's look at type #1....
Type #1 is called positive slope.
As this diagram shows, if a line has positive slope then
as you move along the line from left to right, the line is rising.
Or, in other words, the right end of the line
is higher then the left end of the line....

Now let's look at type #2....
Type #2 is called negative slope.
As this diagram shows, if a line has negative slope then
as you move along the line from left to right, the line is falling.
Or, in other words, the right end of the line
is lower then the left end of the line....

Now let's look at type #3....
Type #3 is called zero slope.
As this diagram shows, if a line has zero slope then
as you move along the line from left to right, the line is level.
Or, in other words, the line is horizontal...

And finally, let's look at type #4....
Type #4 is called no slope.
As this diagram shows, if a line has no slope then
there is no left or right end. A line that has
no slope is a vertical line....

These are the four different types of slope.
Being able to determine the type of slope is very important!
